Miss USA's talent is shooting lasers from her eyes.

Two Detroit groups released actual albums yesterday, not just potential titles. Not asking Satan to get behind them are The Sights, whose s/t New Line debut rocks a realigned power trio format, and Adult., the D's very own electro-scrape savants, whose D.U.M.E. EP is their first for Thrill Jockey. Tune your piano bass to a micro-techno skitter!

Epic Soundtracks always seemed like a nice guy. I felt bad when I heard he died. But that's why Good Things is so nice to hear. A posthumous effort assembled by his brother Nikki Sudden and frequent collaborator Kevin Junior, it's an "eerie, weary, but ultimately heartening stretch of pop melancholia, a fantasy splice of the Carpenters and the Clientele."

..............

It's been out for awhile, but darn it anyway, The Evens' debut is just the greatest. (Props to Rob.) For awhile I couldn't stop listening to "Around the Corner". But now it's that point in "On the Face of It" when the percussion shifts and the guitar pings, and suddenly Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina sound like they're covering Spoon. Get busy!

Rap-metal is dead or dying, its body left to the obnoxious and pompous. Rock radio is under siege from Doug, Jack, and Top 40. And yet, somehow, Mudvayne keeps making records. Eh, I guess there will always be 14 year-old boys who like to hear a guy screaming "'Fuck this shit!' over thudding rhythms."

"On Arular, Sri Lankan Londoner M.I.A. (Maya Arulpragasam) speaks in dizzying multinational slang over beats jury-rigged from U.S. hip hop, dancehall riddim tracks, mech-tech weirdness and the hyper-amateur thrill of South American baile funk. She was an overbuzzed sensation before her first single hit, the face of a fascinating and borderless new sound. But Arularís gut-flip beats legitimately convert M.I.A.ís Internet chatter into real-time booty currency. How can we dance when the blogs are burning? Press play."
